Alarms constituted a high percentage of calls to Estevan Fire Rescue last week, as an arctic air mass plunged the region into record-breaking temperatures.

Fire Chief Rick Davies said the "busier spell of alarm-related calls" was likely due to the cold.

He supplied the following list of calls:

  • January 08, 2024 @ approx. 8:30 AM, dispatched to a single vehicle incident approx. 11 kms west of Estevan. Crews responded, determined that a vehicle had struck a deer. EFR assistance not required. RCMP and tow services to assist. No injuries reported. Crew returned to station.
  • January 09, 2024 @ approx. 3:50 PM, dispatched to a 2 vehicle mvc in the Northeast area of city. Crews responded, assisted EPS and tow services with clearing scene. No injuries reported.  Returned to station.
  • January 12, 2024 @ approx. 8:00 AM, Dispatched to a residential fire alarm in the North West area of city. Incident command responded and investigated. Determined no emergency occurring. Possible cause of alarm due to faulty fire alarm.
  • January 12, 2024 @ approx. 1:00 PM, Dispatched to a possible residential  carbon monoxide alarm in Northwest area of city. Incident command responded and investigated. Low levels of CO were detected. SaskEnergy was called to scene to further investigate and assist homeowner in resolving issue.
  • January 12, 2024 @ approx. Approx. 3:00 PM, Dispatched to a commercial fire alarm on the south side of the city. Crews responded. Determined no emergency. Alarm due to issue with heating appliance. EFR assistance not required. Crews returned to station.
  • January 12, 2024 @ approx. 11:50 PM, Dispatched to commercial fire alarm in the North Central area of the city. Crews responded and investigated. Determined alarm was due to Carbon monoxide. Low levels detected in boiler room. Building management was contacted who in turn contacted a contractor to resolve issue. No further assistance from EFR required. Crews returned to station.
  • January 13, 2024 @ approx. 6:15 AM , Dispatched to a residential Carbon monoxide alarm on the North side of the city. Crews responded and investigated. No CO levels detected. No other issues found. Determined to be probable detector issue. Homeowner to repair. Crews returned to station.
  • January 13, 2024 @ approx. 10:30 AM, Dispatched to a residential fire alarmin the Northeast area of city. Crews responded and investigated. No issues found. Believe issue to be probable detector issue. Homeowner to repair. Crews returned to station.
