Environment and Climate Change Canada is urging people to stay off the highways with strong winds, rain, and possibly close to a foot of snow set to hit the southeast this week.

A Colorado Low is expected to impact southeastern Saskatchewan and southwestern Manitoba from Tuesday night through Thursday.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement Monday morning. That has since been replaced by a winter storm watch.

"Total snowfall accumulations of 10 to 25 cm are possible, with the highest amounts expected over higher elevations," said the watch. "Rain mixed with snow will move into the area Tuesday evening with precipitation fully transitioning to snow overnight on Tuesday. The heaviest snowfall will begin to fall early Wednesday morning."

Total precipitation could exceed 30 mm. The strongest wind gusts, which could reach 80 kph, are expected to occur Wednesday morning to Wednesday night. Environment Canada warned that the strong winds will cause blowing snow.

"Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Avoid travel if possible. If you must travel, keep others informed of your schedule and destination and carry an emergency kit and mobile phone."
