The Groundhog has emerged from his burrow, and if Balzac is proven right we can look forward to early spring.

However, Terri Lang with Environment Canada, who uses slightly more scientific methods of forecasting, said Billy has possibly misjudged what's to come.

"He's not at all credible, as you would assume, groundhogs wouldn't have any sort of predictability whatsoever. For a more scientific approach, our latest forecasts for February do show that we are going to be cooler than average. Doesn't mean it's not going to be cold, doesn't mean it's not going to be mild. If you sort of average everything for the next month it's going to come out slightly cooler than average."

Lang was then asked if because we have seen such warm temperatures of late if we should expect old man winter to come back swinging one last time.

"We're not seeing any evidence of that and we don't necessarily see that as a pattern in the path, just one of those sorts of things where the atmosphere does what it wants to do."
