Fewer and fewer families will be hungry this holiday season thanks to the generosity of people across southeastern Saskatchewan.

Golden West Radio's Blow Away Hunger food drive for the Salvation Army wrapped up Thursday night at the Southern Plains Co-op grocery store in Estevan after a full day of donations.

The Southern Plains Co-op locations in Oxbow and Carlyle were also bustling with people eager to donate food to families in need this holiday season.

In Estevan, all of the food items were gathered up and delivered to the Salvation Army for its food bank.

"This is a nice big tall mountain on our table," said Lynn Rosso with the Salvation Army. "This looks like more than last year."

The total amount of food plus money donations will be calculated in the coming days.

Last year there were 1,200 pounds of food and $2,300 raised.

"The more food and items that we have, the more families we can help at this time and beyond," Rosso said. "COVID changed things for a lot of people, work is harder and scarcer, so this helps a lot of families."

"This shows that the community is still choosing to give give give even if they only have a little bit to give. And with everyone giving a little, we get a lot."
