The carbon tax went up to $80/tonne at the start of April, adding a cost to businesses that rely on carbon-producing methods.

One of the industries that is highly affected by the changes is the transportation industry, which relies on gasoline to move items across the country.

Todd Shirley, Owner and Operator of Bert Baxter Transport, says the carbon tax has had a big effect on his costs.

"Well, this new one's really taking us up, I mean the rates got to go up for everything, so just pretty much everything that we do is going up in cost."

Rates are in flux thanks to the change, with Shirley saying they're already changing how they charge for their services.

"It gets factored into everything we do and this last one, we put our rates up. Haven't got it figured out yet how high I got to put the rates up to, you know, compensate for it, right now. We're still working on that, it's pretty fresh in our heads."

Shirley says he's hoping the tax gets discarded as it doesn't just affect his business and the carbon tax rebate doesn't offset the cost well enough.

"I was hoping it was going to get squashed, but it didn't. It's definitely got its impact on everybody. I mean, your groceries are going up, everything you have is going up in cost. And that little gift that Mister Trudeau gives you once a year doesn't cover it for anybody."
