Some new signs have been put up to help commemorate Remembrance Day in Carievale.

The signs prominently display some of the veterans who served Canada, positioned overtop a poppy with the words "Lest We Forget".

They were the idea of a few different people in the village who wanted to get together to commemorate some of what these veterans did, while also providing some beauty for the village.

Angie Cliffe, the owner of Cliffehanger Signs & Designs which designed the displays, says that

"We started off with an idea that we wanted to pay some honour to the veterans," said Cliffe, "Wanted to show some respect for everything that's going on just pay some tribute to the veterans that have come before us to give us what we have today."

The idea wasn't just to honour past veterans - though that was the main goal - but to also bring some community spirit to Carievale.

"Between that and wanting to do something to invoke some community spirit and so forth," said Cliffe, "We came up with the idea to approach the town and the town would approach the family members and past veterans and see if they were interested in doing something like this every year."

Cliffe says that the family members that were contacted about the project were very happy with the efforts.

Apparently, word has also spread to others, and Cliffe has even more work to do for the next time they put up the signs.

"family members have been very, very supportive. we've had calls after the fact so next year there'll be even more," said Cliffe, "(With) deadlines, we just couldn't accommodate everybody."

Cliffe says that she hopes to see these signs around more communities, in order to spread knowledge about why we have Remembrance Day.

"It would be great to see it all around. I don't know anything about it, that was before my time, my kids certainly don't know about it, my grandchildren don't," said Cliffe, "So this is a way to keep it present and teach them what Remembrance Day is all about I guess."
