For many, the Victoria Day long weekend marks the start of summer. After all, this is typically when people head out to the cottage for the first time, head off for a camping trip at a regional or provincial park, or even take a mini-vacation to visit friends and family.

While it is considered the unofficial start to summer, the May long weekend also marks another unofficial start: construction season.

This year, the provincial government will be working on projects throughout the province. This includes new paving on Highway 1 west of Moose Jaw, Highway 5 west of Humboldt and Highway 21 south of Kindersley. Other projects include paving on Highway 4 north of North Battleford, Highway 6 south o fNaicam and Highway 11 north of Kenaston.

There is also the twinning of a section of Highway 3 west of Prince Albert, and the construction of passing lanes on Highways 5, 7, 12 and 16.

The provincial government has $453 million set aside for capital projects this year on the province’s highways, which will cover more than 1,100 kilometres.

With the start of construction season also comes a reminder. The provincial government wants those driving on the highways to slow down to 60 km/h when passing through work zones on the roads throughout Saskatchewan.
