A well-known individual in Estevan has been recognized for his years of dedication to the community.

On Monday local military historian and former police sergeant Craig Bird was awarded a Police Exemplary Service Medal by Estevan Police Chief Rich Lowen.

The award is given to officers who have exemplary service with no major offences on their record, and they must serve 20 plus years in the law enforcement field. It's a nationwide award that goes through the Governor General.

"It's always humbling. I really like Estevan...Estevan is a great community and it's really been good to me and my family," Bird said. "So just to be recognized for that service is truly an honour, and I continue to be here in Estevan and help out in the community wherever I can still. It's just nice to be recognized."

Bird spent 22 years with the Estevan Police Service after spending time with the Canadian Armed Forces while living in Regina.

"It's just a nice show of appreciation from the organization for all of the service that I put in for the community," Bird said.
