An important day in Canadian history was celebrated over the weekend.

Sunday marked the 100th anniversary of the battle of Vimy Ridge. On April 9th, 1917, Canadian troops took control of the German held high ground during the battle of Arras. However, the victory came with a cost, marking it as the single most bloodiest day in Canadian military history.

Respects were paid in Estevan with a video presentation at the Royal Canadian Legion recapping the events during and leading up to the take over of Vimy Ridge.

Army Cadet Corps Commanding Officer Craig Bird noted that the importance of the day could not be overlooked.

"We teach the cadets military history and the importance of Canada and its world contributions."

"A lot of people have had family that served in the war, there is a lot of local interest," he added.

"I hope to do this every year, and include more local content in the future."

A selection of war memorabilia related to the events that took place in France was also on display, including some of the weapons used at that period.

Like other celebrations across the country, The ceremony in Estevan ended off in front of city hall with a wreath laying ceremony at the cenotaph.
