The Estevan Police Service is gearing up for Impaired Driver Awareness Month in April.

The police service will be teaming up with SGI and MADD Canada to help raise awareness on the dangers of driving impaired.

"We'll be focusing on enforcement and doing a few of the check stop programs and making sure that we're keeping everyone safe in the community," police chief Rich Lowen said.

Lowen said that it's a particularly important initiative as we head into the summer months.

"SGI has let us know that the warmer weather months from May to September see the highest number of casualty collisions involving alcohol or drugs, so that's why we want to get started in April so that we get that awareness out there for everybody," Lowen said.

Lowen added that choosing to drive impaired can have dire consequences.

"Remember that if you're going to be drinking, don't drive," he said. "Choosing to drive while impaired by drugs or alcohol can get you a criminal record, it can cost you your freedom, your reputation, your job, and even your life. So don't drink and drive, don't drive impaired, whether it's drugs or alcohol."
