The Estevan Snowmobile Club is looking forward to what they're hoping is winter with mild conditions and plenty of snow to come.

They've been hard at work getting the usual trails up and running, with a few different trails ready to go in time for the current beautiful weather.

Those trails were unable to be worked on before the winter season due to the lack of snow on the ground, so work began around the new year.

Club President Dave Heier explains what they've got done so far.

"We're able to get out and start grooming new year's eve and new years day and a couple of days later we had about 15 people get on the trails." said Heier, "Hopefully, in the next week or week and a half the vast majority of our trails are in as they're going to be for the season."

A few of those trails are currently open, especially for those in the Estevan area.

"We're open from around Estevan all the way up to Benson, across to Lampman, and to Wilmar. Within the next couple of days, I believe we'll be open all the way to Arcola," said Heier, "So that's all rideable."

Despite the snow levels being much better than what they were before the Christmas season, the club still had to work around a lack of it in some areas.

"We had to sneak into the ditches to put some of the trails in because that's the only place the snow was," said Heier, "Some of the fields are a little bit bare still so we're struggling."

Heier says the current warm weather should help out snowmobilers, as the snow becomes more compact.

"All the snow is not that great, it's really sugary snow," said Heier, "If it doesn't really hold a lot of weight it doesn't want to compact and stuck. This weather right now, believe it or not, is the best thing that could happen to that snow, it'll make it nice and sticky."

He reminds all snowmobilers to register their sleds, as that fee goes back to the club for their expenses.
