A former Estevan broadcaster will be on people's screens more often, as Col Davenport is moving into an evening anchor role.

Davenport is the evening anchor for CTV news, moving into that role from a reporter role.

He talked a bit about his earlier career, and how it started here in Estevan.

"My first broadcast was on the ECS radio show when I was in grade nine, I don't know if it goes that far back, but I'll tell you it's night and day here ten years later. That was where the whole thing started and after I got done high school I was lucky enough to be given an opportunity down at the radio stations there, on-air at CJ1150 within a few weeks of starting up."

He says that the move from reporting stories to anchoring them on newscasts will be a bit of a change.

"Reporting was great, being able to go out and meet everybody and tell the different stories of the day that I was lucky enough to come across. Now I get to talk a little bit more about all the stories of the day instead of just one. It's got its advantages and disadvantages for sure but I'm really looking forward to being the one who tells folks about the news of the day."

Even with the change, Davenport says he's ready and may end up reporting again for special cases.

"I've been anchoring fill-in for a few years now, so I tend to know what to expect on that front, but it will definitely be a bit of an adjustment knowing that's full time. From time to time, if there's a special project I want to go after or something like that we'll find a way to make that work, so once and a while i'll still be able to make sure I can still get my fix out in the field."

Davenport also shared some advice for anyone looking to get into the broadcasting industry.

"I'd say just be willing to take whatever opportunity comes your way. It's not necessarily going to be the job that you want directly out of the gate, it's not necessarily going to be in the place where you want out of the gate, but if you keep at it and work hard then those opportunities do come along."
