Estevan's Fire Chief says a fire ban could very well be coming to Estevan and the surrounding area unless we get some rain by this weekend.

Dale Feser said the region is still in the extreme fire danger category, and his team has had discussions with some of the RM's about imposing a ban as soon as next week.

"We're a little reluctant to throw something in place, but they're still calling for a 40 per cent chance of rain on Saturday. If that comes we should be into a manageable level, however if that doesn't come, probably by Tuesday we're going to look at instituting some fire bans."

Feser said that the farming and ranching community has been very diligent through out the harvest season, but he did have some tips for anyone who is planning on doing any controlled burning this fall.

"Please make sure that you have some form of fire suppression equipment on hand when conducting that," he said. "Try to limit your burns to the early mornings or late afternoons...that's when the wind conditions seem to be more favourable."

He added that strong winds are often a leading factor for fires that get out of control.

"Anything over 25 kilometres an hour...definitely not an ideal condition to burn."

Feser said that fire bans are pretty typical at this time of year.

Environment Canada is calling for a slight chance of showers in the early morning hours on Friday and for rain Friday night and Saturday during the day.
