Icy road conditions can make for some scary scenes on the highways, and they may have done just that on Saturday night. While the cause of the crash is still being investigated, there was a rollover east of the city.

The Estevan Fire Department responded to the report of a rollover on Saturday night at about 7:00, arriving at the scene 15 kilometers east of the city on Highway 39. There were no fatalities, but there was an injury.

"Once on-scene they found that there was an incident," said Deputy Fire Chief Rick Davies. "No entrapment. My understanding is there were some injuries. Westmoreland Coal emergency response team had responded to this call as well, and they took care of the patient until EMS arrived."

Davies did not yet have an update on the patient's condition, though he did say they were transported to the hospital. He also wasn't sure yet what the cause of the accident was, but icy road conditions were a possible factor.

Crews returned to the station but weren't resting for too long as the next call for assistance came bright and early the next morning. At about 4:30 AM, crews were dispatched to a residential carbon monoxide alarm in the eastern part of Estevan.

"Crews responded and investigated," Davies said, "and determined that the CO alarm was due to a faulty detector, so they stood down and returned to station as well."

Davies added that he had heard about a fire in the North Portal area that appeared to be significant over the weekend. He added, however, that he was not aware of Estevan being contacted for mutual aid.
