Older individuals in society transmit experience and knowledge, volunteer within the community, increase participation in the work force, and help care for their families.

As a result, the United Nations has declared October 1st as the International Day of Older Persons and Active Aging to honour individuals over fifty years of age. The day was established to recognize the important role that older individuals play in society and how an active lifestyle contributes to their well being, ensuring that they keep involved in society, remain alert and enjoy a productive life.
