TeleMiracle set a new fundraising record over the weekend.

The popular annual Saskatchewan charity event brought in just over eight million dollars ($8,002,722), breaking the previous record of $7.1 million set a couple years ago.

"It helps those that need it the most," said TeleMiracle Security Chair Preston Majeran. "The TeleMiracle is your funder of those less fortunate, when people need wheelchairs or wheelchair ramps, or any medical stuff, travel expenses. TeleMiracle is there for those who need it."

This year's telethon also saw the largest donation in TeleMiracle history: $1.7 million from a bequest, as somebody left that amount in their will.

"It was just the most surreal thing you've ever seen," Majeran said. "There were tears...tears and [cheers] all over."

This year's event took place in Regina.

In Estevan, three thousand dollars were raised at Affinity Place during the final regular season home game for the Estevan Bruins last week. All of those funds also went towards TeleMiracle.

Majeran said most of the donations from the weekend came in over the phone and online, but there were a few in-person contributions as well. While the majority come from inside Saskatchewan, some money is also donated from other provinces, including Manitoba.

"It just shows you how great people are giving back to the community, and it felt so good to be there again and see everybody from all over the province."

Next year's TeleMiracle will be held in Saskatoon.
