Today is International Women's Day, celebrating the achievements and remembering the struggles women have gone through for equality.

It's the 47th year that the day is being celebrated and is an opportunity for women to share their past experiences and what they'd like to happen in the future.

Included in that number is Shelly Veroba, a councillor for the city of Estevan. She began working with the city in 2016 and says that the experience took some getting used to.

"Truthfully when I first got on council I was the only woman on the council, and so I found it a little bit intimidating but it didn't take me long to realize that among the group of councillors everyone was really supportive, and made sure everybody was included."

Since then, Veroba has been joined by two other women councillors. She says the city has been taking great strides to ensure equality.

"It's just being inclusive, to make sure there are no boundaries put on gender, and make sure there are equal opportunities for women. Today is very important, and I think the city does a very good job of that to ensure that women have equal opportunities within the city, in the city hall, and just in general."

That sentiment was shared by Mayor Roy Ludwig, who says it's important to recognize the women who make everything run smoothly around the city.

One of the other councillors for the city, Rebeca Foord, says Estevan has a lot of women that can act as an inspiration.

"We live in a city that's very fortunate to have so many strong and incredible women. we have so many women in the community that are absolute go-getters. They push for what they want and push for what they believe in and a lot of the people that are running their businesses in the community, who are volunteering for things, who are organizing our major fundraisers, they're women."
