From around 9 to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, the skies completely opened up over the city of Estevan. Early arrivers for the fireworks were greeted by an unexpected light show with lightning ripping through the air throughout the storm.

After 10 o'clock the fuses were lit and every colour of the rainbow shot into the air bursting into different patterns and making all kinds of different explosions as well. Had the rain washed out the event so many in the city looked forward to, it would have ended up being a great disappointment to the hundreds in attendance.

Guests were limited to the outer boundaries of the Affinity Place parking lot, with more people and vehicles lining the side street areas and a countless number of residents watching from their homes or apartments. The large crowd that was on the grounds lets out a drawn-out string of horn honks in appreciation to those who organized the event.

The event being able to go through may have come as a surprise to some who still worry about safety due to COVID-19, but all of the necessary precautions were taken to make the situation safe. Aside from virus protocols the event also had a friendly police and fire department presence to ensure everything went as it was planned.

The fireworks were the only Canada Day event to take place in the Estevan area, with the typical parade and celebration in Bienfait being rescheduled for late summer, early fall. The fate of this year's Spring and Summer seasons will cause a game of catch up for years to come.
