SGI is reminding drivers that the potential consequences of impaired driving go far beyond a possible arrest and criminal code charge. Choosing to drive sober will also help ensure you don't cause a collision, injuring or killing someone... even you.

Law enforcement across the province are focusing this month's Traffic Safety Spotlight again, for the second month in a row, on impaired drivers.

"There may be, throughout the month of January, additional enforcement activities that take place, check stops, that sort of thing," said SGI's Manager of Media Relations, Tyler McMurchy. "Maybe less conspicuous enforcement activities, so drivers need to keep that in mind, enforcement of impaired driving is strong year-round in Saskatchewan."

"We do see between 200 and 400 impaired driving offenses reported by police across Saskatchewan every month, and we certainly want to see those numbers come down," he noted. "We know that impaired driving is still the number one cause of fatalities on our roads, and it's also a significant cause of injuries as well, it's something that nobody should ever do."

he said it always starts with making a plan before you go out for the night.

"You can have a designated driver, or volunteer to be the designated driver in your group," McMurchy suggested. "If there is a taxi service or a designated driver service in your community, you could book one of those."

He added that you can program the Safe Ride App with numbers of those who you know will help you get home safely. Read more HERE.
