A late-night patrol by Estevan Police turned into a pair of pursuits, with the second resulting in their service dog catching the suspect.

A member of the Estevan Police Service was patrolling in the early-morning hours of Thursday. Sgt. Tyler McMillen said the officer noticed a man while patrolling 13th Avenue near the fire hall around 3 a.m. that he believed had a warrant for his arrest because of a stolen vehicle.

The officer was given a false name, and the man ran away.

The officer followed him in the police car to the alley behind the 1300 block on 9th Street where McMillen said the subject stepped away.

"A police member did locate, and the person was arrested. But prior to trying to get him handcuffed and out of the location he was at, he took off running again. Police service dog Max was right there handy, and was deployed and assisted in making that arrest and apprehension of the subject a short distance away."

The man had outstanding warrants for theft of a motor vehicle and obstruction. He'll appear in court on those charges, and was also charged with another count of obstruction for giving false information and two counts of breaching conditions from a previous release order.

"It was a situation that ended pretty quickly," added McMillen. "And thank goodness our police service dog Max was able to assist in the apprehension."
