As many people across the province get set to travel home for the holidays, SGI is reminding motorists to be extra cautious with the winter conditions.

SGI spokesperson Tyler McMurchy says there are a few simple tips to keep in mind to ensure you arrive at your destination safely.

"We want to make sure that people adjust for the winter driving conditions that they're going to be dealing with, and so that really comes down to knowing what kind of weather to expect, so checking the forecast where you're going and the highway hotline for the conditions before you set out," McMurchy said.

McMurchy says there's another important step to take before you even leave your driveway that people might not think about.

"Giving yourself plenty of time to get there," he said. "Maybe leaving a bit early so you're not tempted to drive at a speed faster than the conditions warrant."

There are also some practical things that people can do while they're in their vehicles.

"You may need to slow down, you will need to increase your following distance, and it's very important to see and be seen as well, so making sure your vehicle is fully cleaned off of snow," he said.

And although everyone has a lot on their minds at this time of year, McMurchy stresses that if you are venturing out on to the roads this holiday season, your main focus should be on driving.

"There's all kinds of reasons that people might have their minds on something other than just driving, but really when you are operating a motor vehicle, particularly in less than ideal conditions, you want your primary focus to be on driving, and understanding that everything else can kind of take a back seat to that."
