It's that time of year when the hated cold and flu germs make their steady way throughout the masses, seeking to make yet another human suffer.

That means that it's important to do all you can to avoid being the victim of one of those viruses.

Janice Giroux is the Vice President of Community Health, and she shared some tips for staving off these kinds of bugs.

"Getting the flu vaccine is your best defense. You can also use some really good infection control practices such as washing your hands frequently, especially after coughing or sneezing."

She added that following etiquette such as coughing into your elbow is good to follow as well.

"Avoid touching your nose, mouth and eyes. Make sure you are getting adequate rest, and plenty of fluids. Don't let yourself get run-down. It's also really important that you eat right and get regular exercise."

"If you're sick, avoid contact with the frail, really young, or elderly. Stay away from work or school. Try to reduce your stress. Avoid crowds, and keep your distance from people who are also ill", she added.

She concluded by noting that washing your hands and getting plenty of sleep were imperative to good health.
