Throughout the summer we like to take the time to salute the communities that make up our listeners and make the southeast so awesome! For Wednesday, July 11, we salute Alameda!

South of Carlyle and about 50 kilometers east of Estevan sits the community of about 370 people. The best thing about the town of Alameda are the people there. Just ask Alameda Mayor Perry Kinder, who has lived in town for 30 years.

"It's small but very supportive," he said. "The people are awesome. When we had flooding this year not only did we get the fire department out but multiple volunteers who came out and cleaned up basements and other things. It's a good working community, very help-thy neighbor."

It may seem like a quiet town to pass through it, but Alameda has a lot of work to do this summer. One big project for the town in the past year was the rink, and more is on the way for 2018-19.

"Our rink had a work over from top to bottom last year," Kinder said. "Tearing out the cement and everything and redoing it. It's pretty much complete and it was definitely a huge success. One we're working on this year is working with the RM as they're building a new shop just west of town. We'll work to get that up and running in the next year."

When hockey season rolls around, that rink gets busy. One person who spent a lot of time in that rink over the years is current Estevan Bruin and Alameda native Jayden Davis.

"We've had a few junior players over the years and Jayden is going through that process right now," said Kinder. "It's exciting for him and the community."

Alameda has been a part of our listening audience at Golden West Radio for 50 years. Here's to 50 more!
