The sheets were busy over the weekend at the Power Dodge Curling Centre, as Estevan played host to the Sask Curling Tour Bonspiel.

The southeast was well represented on the ice, as Estevan's Brent Gedak and his team, as well as Lampman's Mark Walters and his crew competed.

Team Walter finished 1-2, having won their first game 8-5 over Team Hartung, which also included local Kris Keating of Benson, before conceding the final two games.

Team Gedak finished 2-1, winning their first two matches 8-2 and 7-5 before conceding the final one 11-4 to Team Bryden in the semi final

"We got a good spot in the draw where we only had to play two games to qualify for the playoffs," Skip Brent Gedak said, noting that Bryden had been a tough opponent all year long. He added that any competition they get will help prepare them for their upcoming participation in the 2018 Tankard.

"Any event that we play at leading up to that is going to give us that training. We're looking forward to our next 'Spiel, it's probably not going to be until January now. We'll have a little break, we'll be able to practice and enjoy the holidays."

The winner of the final turned out to be Team Bitz from Saskatoon, skipped by Scott Bitz. Beating Team Bryden 5-1, they earned themselves a berth in the 2018 Tankard to compete alongside Gedak.

"You never turn down a spot, for sure," Bitz said of the win, noting that they haven't been able to be on the ice as much as they would like, which could be a bit of a disadvantage come Feburary.

He added that he has played quite of few of his opponents in the past, having gotten started in the sport in his mid teens.

"It's neat this weekend, seeing a couple of the young teams out and playing. That's kind of fun, because those are the guys that you're going to end up watching down the road."

The coming Tankard will not be his first rodeo, so he plans to relax throughout the holidays and take things as they come, as Gedak could provide some stiff competition.

The 2018 SaskTel Tankard will be held inside Affinity Place from January 31 - February 4.
