The Estevan Exhibition Grounds were a busy place over the weekend, as the 2018 Fountain Tire Ex Barrel Racing event was held in the muggy heat.

"Given the weather that we had, we had a great turnout. We had 108 entries in the Open, 35 Youth, and we had 55 Pole-benders and 22 Peewees," shared Organizer Lindsay Collins.

No serious consequences were suffered as a result of the record setting temperatures, and that was due to the diligent care and attention given by those involved.

"It (the heat) definitely could have posed problems, if people weren't careful. We had lots of paddling pools set up, we had wash racks set up for the horses, and had lots of water on the ground to make sure that everybody was hydrated, including the animals."

"We started two hours early, too, to try and beat the heat. Then we took a break during the extreme part of the day and started again at seven o' clock at night, so that really helped as well," said Collins.

She added that some of the standouts from the event was their "Hooves vs. Hogs", where the horses would race dirtbikes.
