Heading into Saturday's preseason game against Winnipeg, the biggest story was about who wasn't playing quarterback for the Saskatchewan Roughriders. After the game, the story was about who did.

Much-hyped offseason pickup Vince Young, the former NFL quarterback, was out of the lineup due to a leg injury sustained at training camp last week.

That left hopefuls Bryan Bennett and Brandon Bridge as the signal-callers in the exhibition game against Winnipeg - the first 'Riders game of any kind to be played at the new Mosaic stadium.

Bridge made the most of his opportunity, going 20-26 in pass attempts for 201 yards, including a seven-yard touchdown pass to Duron Carter.

Bridge, who finished the 2016 season with the Green & White, said familiarity bred success.

"I had a whole offseason with that playbook," he said. "Ever since then I know exactly where to go with my throws, so I was able to go where I needed to be with the football."

"Coach said we ran over 1200 plays during training camp," Bridge continued. "Everybody was locked in and focused. We shortened the playbook down and everyone knew what their assignments were and we were able to execute."

As for Bennett, he was 7-for-15 passing for 82 yards and rushed once for four yards. His possessions produced six points (two field goals) but he was sacked three times and lost two of his three fumbles.

The 'Riders made a pair of roster moves Monday, announcing the release of International defensive backs Alfonzo Dennard and Tyler Hunter.

The next preseason game for Saskatchewan is Friday, June 16 when they travel to Vancouver to play the B.C. Lions.
