Two of the top teams in the Big Six Hockey League kept on a-rollin' on Tuesday night with two games being played in the southeast.
The Wawota Flyers have now won five straight games, and have points in their last eight matches overall, after defeating the Oxbow Huskies 4-1 in the feature broadcast on CJ1150.
Meanwhile, the Bienfait Coalers are in sole possession of top spot in the Big Six following their 6-4 victory over the struggling Cougars in Carlyle.
LAMONTAGNE LEADS FLYERS TO VICTORY WITH HAT-TRICK
The Wawota Flyers sport the three top scorers in the Big Six Hockey League, there's just now been a shuffle at the top of the scoring race.
With Brent Struble (30 pts) out of the lineup on Tuesday, linemate Justin Lamontagne took full advantage of the opportunity by scoring a hat-trick against the Huskies. Lamontagne scored a minute into the game, shorthanded in the first period and got his third of the night halfway through the game to lead the offence for Wawota.
Lamontagne now leads the Big Six in both goals (17) and points (31). Not far behind is Flyers' centre, and two-time defending scoring champion, Riley Riddell who has 26 points.
Warren Hunter added the other goal for Wawota while Oxbow's Kyle Rudnitski broke Guillaume Blouin's shutout bid halfway through the third period to round out the scoring.
BIENFAIT SURVIVES 2ND PERIOD SCARE; HOLDS OFF CARLYLE FOR THE WIN
The west-division leading Bienfait Coalers made their way to Carlyle to take on the last place Cougars, who were striving to end their 8-game losing streak.
The visiting Coalers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first period and it looked as if it might be a runaway victory for Bienfait. But Carlyle continued to show the same fight they've displayed all season and mounted an impressive comeback.
Carlyle scored four straight goals, including three on the powerplay, to come all the way back and temporarily take a 4-3 lead in the second period. That's when Bienfait finally found a way to respond as the Coalers scored twice before the end of the second period to retake the lead 5-4.
Bienfait added an insurance marker in the third period and held off the Cougars the rest of the way for a 6-4 victory.
There is one more game this week before five on the weekend. As well, you can tune into a Big Six broadcast on CJ1150 every night this weekend as three games will be broadcast from three communities.
