This week, the quarterfinal round in the Big Six playoffs got started up, and all four series' got their start in the last two days.

Tuesday

Midale (6) @ Carnduff (3)

The Red Devils finished the season as the hottest team in the Big Six Hockey League as they won the last five of their regular season games, and after a week of rest were looking to take advantage of the Mustangs. Midale had a string of bad luck in their last three games. They lost two tight games to Bienfait and Carlyle before a big loss in their last game to Redvers, good enough for the three game losing streak.

Five minutes into the first period, the Red Devils would get the first opportunity on the power play, and with Midale having two guys in the box, the Red Devils would capitalize when Blake McMillen would fire in the first goal of the series.

The first period would end with the single goal on the board, and after that Carnduff with find their scoring touch in five-on-five. Two straight goals from Trevor Geiger at the 11:49 and 15:45 marks would make it a 3-0 game before the end of the second.

The third period would not be any kinder to the Mustangs. In the first minute, Geiger would pick up his third straight point thanks to an assist on a goal from Cody Moore. Halfway through the period, the Red Devils would again capitalize on the powerplay when Mark Moriarty got on the board.

In the last two minutes, the Red Devils would add one more from Sheldon Thompson to cap off a big game one win at home

FINAL SCORE: Carnduff 6 - 0 Midale                            Series Score: 1-0 Carnduff

Bienfait (5) @ Carlyle (4)

These two teams started off with one heck of a game to start the series. Two great goaltenders. Two guys who led the league in scoring at different points in the season, and two teams separated by a single game in the standings.

In the first period, both teams would battle back and forth before the seal would break just under five minutes into the game. Brett Turgeon would get on the board first for the Cougars, giving them the one goal lead that they would hold on to for the next six minutes. Cooper Fox had an assist on the opening goal and at the 11:46 mark, he would add a goal to that total for a 2-0 lead.

Before the end of the period however, with 1:29 left to play the Coalers would get one passed Landon Audet. Levi Kress scored the first goal of the game for the away team, making it 2-1 for the end of the first.

The second period would be a clean slate of hockey. No goals, no penalties, nothing that would affect the outcome of the game other than some back and forth defensive hockey. By the time the third period came, both teams were ready for some offence again.

Again the Cougars would start the scoring, just under three minutes into the third thanks to a penalty shot goal from Billy Greenwood, putting the Cougars up by two for the second time this game. The Coalers wouldn't wait around to respond however, as with only 6:58 to go in the game, the regular season's leader in points and goals would finally get on the board.

Dylan Herzberg would make it a one goal game with assists from Wyatt Garagan and Keegan Malaryk. Another four minutes later, and Herzberg would tie it up again with help from Garagan, and another helper from Preston Erickson, only 11 seconds before the halfway mark of the period.

Both teams would tighten things back up for the rest of the third with some defensive hockey, and neither team would be able to put one into the twine, so we needed overtime. In period number four, the Coalers would get a powerplay, but Audet for the Cougars and Jackson Walliser for the Coalers would keep the crease locked up tight, so we needed a fifth.

In the second overtime, again the first ten minutes would remain the offensive battle back and forth to no avail for either team, until tensions boiled at the 11:14 mark. An interference call on Ben Johnstone would inspire a melee, resulting two roughing calls to either team, Zach Brown and Mason Benning to the box. 5-on-4 hockey, Coalers with the powerplay.

The Cougars would defend the puck away from Audet for the majority of the two minutes, but with only ten seconds left to kill, Preston Erickson's pass would find Keegan Malaryk, would get the final tally of the game.

FINAL SCORE: Bienfait 4 - 3 Carlyle                           Series Score: 1 - 0 Bienfait

Wednesday

Wawota (7) @ Redvers (2)

The Rockets come into the series fresh off a week's worth of rest, whereas the Flyers got an extra two games to play to come to the quarterfinals.

In the first period, both teams would come back and forth at each other but the Flyers would break the ice first. Brady Dinwoodie, who didn't have a single goal in the survivor series but had five assists, would get the first of the quarter finals for Wawota, and the lone goal would be good enough to hold up through the remaining 13:14 of the first.

In the second, it would take until the final five minutes of the period but Redvers would come alive and fire in two. The first coming from Brady Fiderchuk, and with only for seconds left Remi Lamotte would take the lead for the Rockets.

The third period would add more goals behind Brandon Stoudt starting less than seven minutes in. Drew Hoff would score for the two goal lead. After that, the Rockets would intermittently add three more from Gavin Martel, Drew Hoff's second, and in the remaining 36 seconds, Todd Gervais.

FINAL SCORE: Redvers 6 - 1 Wawota                           Series Score: 1-0 Redvers

Kipling/Windthorst (9) @ Yellow Grass (1)

The Kipling/Windthorst Oil Kings surprised the Oxbow Huskies with a big 5-3 win in their own barn in game of the survivor series that they road through game two. The Yellow Grass Wheat Kings were much more dominant throughout their regular season however, winning all 9 games they played on their home ice.

The first period would start off fairly tame compared to the rest of the game, only two goals for the Wheat Kings. The first came off the stick of Brandt Hudson 6:24 into the period, and another would come in the final three minutes of the period when Reid Patterson would add another.

In the second, the Wheat Kings would open the floodgates, but it would take almost eight minutes to do so. Devin Cobbold would start the second period scoring and be followed up by Dylan Frey, a second from Frey, and the fourth from Cole Rooney, good for the 6-0 lead.

The Wheat Kings would add another early in the third from Braden Mellon, and Shelby Gray would add another shortly after.

The Oil Kings would strike back thanks to Josh Hassler, but it would be too little too late for the Oil Kings. Yellow Grass would add another form Devon Johnson, the eighth different scorer in the game of the Wheat Kings, to finish off a massive win in game one.

FINAL SCORE: Yellow Grass 9 - 1 Kipling/Windthorst                           Series Score: 1-0 Yellow Grass
