BIENFAIT CLINCHES 3RD OVERALL WITH 6-3 WIN OVER WAWOTA

HIGHLIGHTS:

The game with the most on the line featured the two-time defending champion Wawota Flyers on the road against the Bienfait Coalers, where the winner would clinch 3rd overall in the standings entering playoffs.

The hometown squad from Bienfait jumped out to an early lead, with Dylan Herzberg (10) and Kyle Garagan (9) beating Wawota's Guillaume Blouin to give the Coalers a 2-0 lead after the first period.

Wyatt Garagan would extend Bienfait's lead to 3-0 early in the middle frame by scoring his league-leading 26th goal of the season, breaking a tie with Taysen Holt of the Oxbow Huskies.

However, the Flyers wouldn't relinquish the 3rd overall seed without a fight. Tyler Matthewson (3) and Kent Sauter (16) scored for Wawota before the intermission to make it 3-2 after two periods.

Wawota would tie the game in the first minute of the third period. A bouncing puck in front of the Bienfait net would be hit out of the air with the arm of Coalers' defenceman Garrett Lasko and into his own net behind Jackson Walliser. Sauter (17) would get credit for the goal and the game was even at 3-3.

But the Coalers would be able to survive the Flyers' comeback attempt as the period wore on. Herzberg (11) potted his second of the game to reverse the momentum and put Bienfait back on top 4-3. Then minutes later, Kyle Garagan shoveled home a rebound for his second of the night which took the wind out of the Flyers' sails with the Coalers now leading 5-3. Payden Benning (22) would blast home another marker with just over five minutes remaining for the dagger in a 6-3 Bienfait victory.

With the win, Bienfait (33 points) leapfrogs Wawota (32 points) for 3rd overall and will face the Midale Mustangs in the Best-of-3 quarterfinal round. Wawota knew they had to play Yellow Grass in the 4th/5th series, all that was left to decide was home-ice advantage...

Yellow Grass grinded out a 7-4 home victory over the Carlyle Cougars on Saturday night. Carlyle led 2-1 after the first period and the two teams were tied at 3-3 after two periods.

Yellow Grass took a 5-4 lead with seven minutes left in regulation and added two late goals for the 7-4 victory.

With the win, the Wheat Kings (32 points) will finish 4th overall in the standings. Both Yellow Grass (15-7-2) and Wawota (14-6-4) finish with the same amount of points, but Yellow Grass earns the tiebreaker with more wins at the end of the regular season which is the first tiebreaking procedure.

Interesting to note that Wawota won the season series over Yellow Grass (Wawota was 2-0-1 against Yellow Grass), which is the second tiebreaking procedure.
