HIGHLIGHTS:

In one of the most bizarre endings all season long in the Big Six Hockey League, the two-time defending league champion Wawota Flyers have stayed alive in their semi-final series against the Carnduff Red Devils.

Wawota survived a three-goal Carnduff comeback in the 3rd period, scoring on the powerplay with less than four minutes to play and adding an empty net goal for a 5-3 victory to force a 5th and deciding game.

After a scoreless first period, Wawota would finally break through after being shutout for four periods on their home ice in the series. Justin Lamontagne deflected home a Rob West shot on the powerplay for his first point of the series to give Wawota a 1-0 lead early in the 2nd period.

With a few minutes left in the middle frame, Ryan Taylor tapped home a pass from Riley Riddell to make it 2-0. Then with 55 seconds left, a Riddell one-timer went off the skate of Kent Sauter and past Carnduff's Adrian Rubeniuk to put the Flyers up 3-0 after two periods.

However, the league's top team during the season wouldn't go down easy. The Red Devils would get on the board just a minute into the 3rd period as Callan Carlton's first of the postseason made it 3-1.

Minutes later, a Kody Martin shot went wide of the net but Cody Moore backhanded home the rebound to cut the lead to 3-2.

Then with just over nine minutes left in regulation, one of the most bizarre goals you'd ever see would tie the game for Carnduff.

Wawota forward Justin Lamontagne was rushing down the wing in the offensive zone and while trying to cut around his defender, Lamontagne fell to the ice and the officials arm shot up.

Almost everyone assumed Carnduff would be assessed a penalty for holding, but after the Red Devils touched the puck twice in their own zone with no whistle it became clear that the penalty would be going to Lamontagne.

However, Flyers' goaltender Guillaume Blouin raced out of his net towards the bench for the extra attacker. With Blouin almost to the bench, Wawota finally realized the penalty was coming to them and Blouin attempted to scramble back towards his net. Meanwhile, the puck came to Carnduff's Matt Audette in the neutral zone. Audette crossed the red line and was able to fire the puck into the open net before Blouin could recover, tying the game at 3-3.

The play sent the Wawota bench into an uproar, though there was no chance the goal would be called back. Coach Mark Cudmore would be kicked off the bench and out of the game while arguing the call. When play resumed, after about 20 seconds, the referee blew his whistle as Blouin kept arguing the call and Blouin was given a 2-minute penalty after smashing a water bottle with his stick.

Things would eventually settle down and Wawota was able to kill off the penalty to Blouin. Teams would trade chances for five minutes before Wawota would earn another powerplay.

Wawota Went 3/4 On The Powerplay In Game 4.

The Flyers would execute with the man advantage for the third time in the game as with just under four minutes to play, Warren Hunter's blast from the point went off Sauter and past Rubeniuk to put Wawota up 4-3 with only minutes to play in regulation.

Taylor Ernst would get an insurance marker with an empty-net goal with 1:30 remaining to seal the deal on a 5-3 Flyers' victory. The top scorer of the game was Riley Riddell, who finished the night with four assists.

The time and date of Game 5 has not yet been announced, but will likely be played on Monday or Tuesday. Either way, the series-deciding game will be broadcast on CJ1150 and discoverestevan.com from the Fast Centennial Arena in Carnduff.

The winner of Game 5 will advance to the Big Six Championship Final, where the Redvers Rockets are waiting.
