It was an eventful morning for the Estevan Bruins during the 2017 SJHL Bantam Draft. The club made seven picks taking six forwards and one goalie.

Post draft interview with Bruins Head Coach and General Manager Chris Lewgood:

Early in the 1st round, the Bruins swung a trade with the Melfort Mustangs to move up to 3rd overall where they selected Lumsden native Cal Caragata. The 5-11, 173-pound forward posted impressive numbers with the Prairie Storm, scoring 38 goals and 22 assists in only 30 games played.

Holding on to their 9th overall selection in the first round, the Bruins snatched up Regina born Johnny Carmichael who scored 25 goals and 31 assists for the Regina Aces. Carmichael stands at 5-9 and weighs in at 153 pounds. The Bruins look to have added a couple of gifted scoring forwards with their first two selections.

The Bruins wouldn't make a selection again until the 47th pick in the 4th round where they took forward Lucius Schmidt out of Pilot Butte. The 5-8, 188-pound teammate of Caragata, posted 7 goals and 6 assists in 28 games for the Prairie Storm.

Back to back 5th round picks had the Bruins select Regina born forward Nick Steciuk 57th overall. Standing at 6-1 and 155 pounds, the forward put up 12 goals and 8 assists in 28 games played for the Regina Pat Blues. With the 58th pick, the Bruins took Robert Pizzey from the Sask Valley Vipers. The small forward standing 5-0 tall weighing in at 85 pounds scored 2 goals and 7 assists in 30 games.

In the 6th and final round, the Bruins would make a trade with the Notre Dame Hounds where they took goaltender Damion Lindskog 66th overall. The 6-0, 155-pound keeper from Regina posted a 4.40 goals against average and a record of 5-10-2 with the Regina Pat Blues. Lindskog was a teammate of the Bruins 5th round pick Nick Steciuk.

With the Bruins final pick in the draft they selected Alameda born Cody Davis 69th overall, who spent last season with the TS&M Estevan Bruins. The 5-4, 112-pound forward put up 8 goals and 13 assists in 30 games on the year.
