Six Estevan Bruins skaters went to Regina on Monday January 15 with a mind to help team SJHL beat team MJHL and show off their skills to an audience of scouts. They accmplished both feats.

The Bruins skaters won both games they played in, and Michael McChesney led the tournament in goals with three. In total, five of six Bruins skaters put up at least a point, and the Bruins accounted for four of Team Mitchell's eight goals.

McChesney in particular had a stellar showing, with one of his goals being a game-winner, and another coming shorthanded.

"I don;'t know what the D men were thinking," McChesney said of his shorthanded goal. "They were sitting back so I just chipped it by them, used my speed to get past them, and then I took a little note out of Goberis's book and went forehand-backhand-fivehole."

It was a continuation of a great month for McChesney so far. Going back to league play, he's posted six goals in his past six games.

"A lot of good bounces going my way," McChesney said, downplaying his recent offensive contributions. "I'm in the right place at the right time and working hard. For the second half we definitely want to be in third place instead of sixth or seventh, so I'm just trying to keep it up as best I can."

For Goberis, in his third year in the SJHL, it was a chance to play with some players he'd spend most of three seasons only seeing as foes.

"MacDougal and Doerksen from Nipawin, on the ice they're vocal leaders and heavy to play against," Goberis said, "but off the ice they're quiet and really nice guys, so it was pretty weird to see that."

As much as both players wanted to strut their skills in front of an audience of college scouts, they both knew they were representing the SJHL as well as themselves.

"The coaches were really preaching to have some pride in this," Goberis said, "even though we're playing with guys we're not familiar with or we don't like playing against we're all playing for the SJ so we had to take pride in that."

With the showcase behind them, the Bruins now shift focus to the Weyburn Red Wings, who will make their second stop of the year in Estevan on Friday, January 19.

"They're going to bring a better game than they did last time," Goberis said of the Red Wings. "It wasn't their best game but it wasn't ours either so if we play the way we played that last weekend but better we could get four points."

Puck drop for Friday's game is 7:30. The rematch goes the next night in Weyburn at 7:30, and that game will be broadcast live on Rock 106.
