The first draw of the Home Hardware Canada Cup came to a close Wednesday morning with nearly all of the teams on the ice taking it the distance.

Despite gaining a narrow lead a couple times over ten ends, Matt Dunstone and company discovered bad luck in the ninth end to drop their first match of the tournament, 7-4 to Brad Gushue. Skip Dunstone noted that it'll have to be one to forget and move on from.

"You have to...you have no choice but to shake it. You always want to start off your event with a win, regardless who you're playing. Respect all, fear none. We had expectations of winning that game. It's disappointing, but on to the next."

Meanwhile, Gushue was all smiles as he exited the ice with the victory in hand.

"The win feels great, it was a tough game. Matt's (Dunstone) team played very well, I thought out team played very well. Even at the end, Matt's team had an outside chance at winning the game...it was a tight game, it was a grind, for sure."

He added that one can expect many more matchups in the event to see exciting finishes.

Team Robertson was the only team to force a conceded defeat, this on Carey after the ninth end with an 11-6 lead.

"It's a nice way to start, for sure," stated Lead Darcy Robertson, "We have to build on it. We know that we have to get better every game, and we have a hard game next, we play (Jennifer) Jones (in draw 3). We're just building on what we learned today and just continuing that on the next game."

Other scores from draw one included Team Flaxey over Walker 6-5, while in the mens, Epping defeated Boettcher 7-5 and Jacobs beat Koe 9-5.

The second draw of the Home Hardware Canada Cup gets underway at 2:00 PM in Affinity Place. Jacobs and Gushue will each look to hand the other their first loss, while Epping takes on Carruthers, Scheidegger plays Walker, Einarson takes on Homan and Jones takes on Carey.
