Estevan's Cole Fonstad has been named to Canada's roster for the upcoming 2018 International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 World Championship in Russia.

For the first time in his career, Fonstad will represent Canada from April 19-29 in Chelyabinsk and Magnitogorsk. Just one of 21 players selected from Canada, the 17-year-old will join his teammates this coming weekend in Toronto for training camp, before departing for Russia on April 10.

Most recently, Fonstad and his Prince Albert Raiders took one of the Western Hockey League's best teams in the Moose Jaw Warriors to the brink of elimination, in a back and forth game seven affair which saw the Warriors come out on top. He was able to score four times in the series, along with one assist in seven games played.

To start the season, Fonstad was initially left off of the National Hockey League's Central Scouting list, but by their mid-season ranking, his play launched him to 78th among skaters in North America. Catching the attention of NHL Central Scouting also helped the Estevan native into the 2018 Canadian Hockey League Top Prospects game, where he notched a goal for Team Orr.

Speaking to Fonstad in late 2017, he mentioned making the Under-18 Canada team as one of his main goals for the season.

Finishing the regular season with 21 goals and 52 assists in 72 games, Fonstad certainly put the hockey world on notice. When the NHL Draft takes place in Dallas this summer, there's no doubt Fonstad will hear his name called on either the 22nd or 23rd of June.
