The Estevan Comprehensive School held their annual Athletic Awards on Thursday evening, in what was called "A year to remember" by Vice Principal Nathan Johnson. These well deserving student-athletes put in countless hours around various courts, tracks, and fields throughout the year. As student-athletes, these young men and women do a great job of balancing their time between sports and school work. It shows in a big way as 60 of the 74 award winners made the honor roll this year.

Athletes from every team at ECS were awarded for Excellence, Commitment and Success. In addition to those three team awards, four athletes were recognized school-wide for the Special Athletic Awards. A female and male winner for Outstanding Sportsmanship saw Sammy Wade and Jordan Fichter take home the honor.

"It's really exciting to get one award, but getting a few feels really good," said Fichter after walking away with three awards on the night. "Getting to go to provincials in volleyball and track was really fun," he added.

Along with winning the Outstanding Male Sportsmanship award, Jordan also won the Success award in Track and Field as well as the Commitment award for his play on the Sr. Boys Volleyball team. Jordan's plans for next year include going to the University of Saskatchewan to pursue sports medicine.

"It feels pretty good, especially since its a sportsmanship award," explained Wade, the grade eleven student. "My mom always makes me sign up for everything and I end up liking it. My basketball coach Mrs. Smoliak always pushes me to do things," she mentioned. Wade's plans for next year include playing Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton and Track.

Following both the Male and Female Sportsmanship awards being handed out, were the presentations of Male and Female Athlete of the year. Kourtney Kobitz and Donny Mortenson took home the hardware in what was a successful night for both of the grade twelve students from ECS.

"I'm pretty proud, it feels really good to be acknowledged for all the work I put in. Winning the Mcleoud series three years in a row is amazing," shared Mortenson, moments after winning Male Athlete of the Year.

He also won the Success award for his outstanding play in Football. Some of Donny's best memories include riding the bus with the boys on the way to tournaments. Mortenson's plans for next year include attending the University of Saskatchewan, where he will try to make the Basketball team as a walk on.

Kourtney Kobitz accepting Female Athlete of the Year capping off her third win of the night.

"It was a big honor, I was very surprised that I got it," said Kobitz after winning Female Athlete of the Year. "I want to thank my teammates, coaches and family for helping me throughout the school year. It's tough to do sports and school throughout the whole year and I'm very thankful for the support."

Kobitz noted going to hoopla in her senior year with the basketball team was one of her biggest memories as it was the first time in twelve years for the team. To go along with her Athlete of the Year award was Excellence in Sr. Girls Basketball and Commitment to Sr. Girls Volleyball. Her plans for next year include going to the University of Regina for nursing. Kobitz also mentioned she is hoping to play basketball at the college or university level.
