The Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs Senior Boys Basketball team is preparing to kick off their season this weekend at the 1st Annual O'Neill Basketball Classic in Regina.

With three grade twelves, eight grade elevens, and one grade nine suiting up for the team, the generally younger senior squad will look to make some noise in the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association's 5A class.

"The program is still strong, one of the tougher years to actually pick the team since we had some surprises coming out of different grades," said the boys Assistant Coach, Dustin Wilson. "We were really impressed with the guys coming in and it got us excited. It was nice to see some of the guys that were on the team last year step up and develop over the summer."

Wilson noted the first tournament of the year is a great way to gauge where the team will stand, and what they will need to work on moving forward.

"In the tournament we play teams like Yorkton who we will be running into throughout the season and into playoffs. It will be a good measuring stick and see how we progress through the year. There's some spots that we have a pretty good idea of who will see some minutes, and there's some guys that kind of came out of no where. This first tournament will be interesting to see how some of these guys will do in a game situation at the 5A level."

In most cases, senior's on high school sports teams are looked at as role models and voices in the dressing room when the group needs a spark, and it will be no different for the senior boys as Wilson pointed to a pair of players on this years team.

"John Sasi and Carter Davenport will definitely be the leaders on the team bringing the experience they have from years previous. A couple grade elevens including Jack Mcgeough and Justin Van Achte bring some of the experience they had last year that will help them out this year."

"I'm a pretty competitive guy and so is Nathan(Johnson). The team has tasted some success before and they know that they can do some damage," Wilson concluded.
