While it wasn't quite the start they were hoping for, the ECS Elecs Senior Girls basketball squad came back from the first tournament of the year ready for the season ahead.

Competing in the O'Neill Classic in Regina, the girls went 1-2, beating Yorkton by 12 points before falling by a slightly lesser margin, 10 points, to two Regina teams.

"The first tournament of the season is always interesting to see how the team plays with one another. Half of our team is new, with a lot of younger players from grades nine and ten," said Coach Jesse Smoliak.

"Overall, I'm really happy with how the team competed. We do not have a lot of height, so we will have to be a running team, which means that the girls need to be conditioned."

Their next tournament is in Indian Head, and she noted that this past weekend gave them some insight as to the potential opponents ahead.

"We saw some 5A teams and 4A teams which we will compete against again this season, so we're hoping for a rematch with a couple of them."

"This tournament was a great start to our season, because I didn't really know where we were going to go with so many new players. However, there were a lot of good things that happened, I'm looking forward to the rest of the season."
