On the second day of the NHL draft in Dallas, Estevan's Cole Fonstad waited a bit longer than expected to hear his name called, but when he finally did it was the NHL's most storied franchise doing the calling.

Fonstad was selected 128th overall in the 2018 NHL entry draft by the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday, June 23. Fonstad finished his WHL season with 73 points in 72 games for the Prince Albert Raiders.

Fonstad becomes the first Estevan-born player to be drafted since Joel Stepp and Dustin Johnner in 2001. He is the first ever Estevan-born player to be drafted by Montreal.

Fonstad's minor hockey career began in Estevan with the Bantam AA Bruins, where he posted an impressive 135 total points in 60 games over two seasons. He played a single game for the Estevan Bruins of the SJHL, scoring his first junior goal, before moving up to Prince Albert for the past two seasons.

He also played for team Canada at the World Under-18 Championships in Russia this past spring. He played in five games, but was held pointless.

Montreal's prospect development camp will be be held June 28-July 1 in  Brossard, Quebec and as of now the expectation is that Fonstad will attend. Fonstad's fellow Canadiens draftees from 2018 include number three overall pick Jesperi Kotkaniemi.
