The Estevan Youth Soccer Association has decided that the program will kick off as planned for the 2017 season. The club, who was facing a shortage of volunteers, held a meeting on Tuesday night to decide whether or not they had enough support to continue. Stacy Murphy, President of the group, said that the response from the public has been very positive and a number of people have stepped forward in order to maintain the program.

"There's a lot of people who want to see their kids participate in team sports because it helps teach their kids good skills not only when they're little but when they grow and develop. I think it's really important and it shows that the community cares to put forth volunteers to make sure that such a worthwhile program can take place. We have about 110 kids registered and we should have enough coaches for the number of kids registered. So the season will be going ahead for sure.

She has noted that while popularity has waned over the years, she is looking at an increase interest in the sport partly due to the Canadian Women's National soccer team and the two bronze medals they won at the last two Olympics games in 2012, 2016.

She also attributes the growing interest to the fun the players have participating in the sport.

"It's fun for the kids, specifically for the under six because they get to run and be free. They are learning the skills and they don't realize it yet. And they are learning how to be teammates and how to work as a team and that it's not just about the individual. So it's helping to develop skills that they'll be able to use for the rest of their lives.

The club is still accepting registration until April 20. Those looking to register can pick up form at Century 21 office or go online to ssa-estevanyouth.goalline.ca. While she is excited that the season will be going on, she adds that volunteers are still needed.
