At the beginning of last week, the Midget AA Estevan Apex Bruins made an early season coaching change and replaced Sean Riley with Robin Ulrich.

Ulrich, who is currently the physical education teacher at Lampman School, steps into the position with a wealth of valuable experience after she spent over ten seasons as a coach and player for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies women's program.

Ulrich spent five seasons on the back end for the Huskies from 2004 to 2009. The former defenseman and team captain was named a Canada West First Team All-Star and won the conference student-athlete community award. As a member of the coaching staff, Ulrich helped guide the Huskies to their first-ever Canada West Championship and a bronze medal at the CIS Championship in 2013-14.

"I'm excited, this is my first chance to work with boys at an elite level. I have had lots of experience working on the female side of the game so its exciting for me to take over and coach a high level. Last season, I was the interim Head Coach at the University of Saskatchewan and previously to that I spent over five seasons as an assistant coach there."

Former coach of the Apex Bruins, Blake Jamieson has been helping out on an interim basis until Ulrich can completely make the move. During Ulrich's first game this season the Bruins picked up their first win, and it couldn't have come at a better time.

"I coach senior volleyball in Lampman so I'm a little bit in transition, so my first game was last Sunday. It was a good start, the boys played really well and it was a really good character win. We got ourselves down early and they found a way to claw back and win the game for our first of the season."

On Tuesday night, the Bruins walked away from their game in Weyburn with a 3-1 win against an undefeated team in the Wings, giving the black and gold two straight victories.

"A good character game again, the boys played well across the board and we rolled our lines the entire game. Everyone is buying into the system and the things we're trying to do, so overall it was a really good game," Ulrich concluded.

The Apex Bruins now sit at 2-4-2 and will return to action on Friday, October 27th when the travel to White City to play Prairie Storm.
