Midale's own, Keely Shaw, para-cyclist with Team Canada, will be heading to Italy soon to compete in the World Championships.

"I'm super excited," she shared, "this whole season since I found out I made the high-performance team, it's kind of been working towards this selection of world championship. And I could not be more excited."

Shaw has enjoyed a very successful season so far and is currently ranked 3rd worldwide in the C4 category.

"It's been unreal thinking I entered the international race just this past February, to be on the high-performance team both on the track and the road side, pulling out a silver at Nationals, following that up with a silver on the world stage."

"If you would have asked me where I would be a year ago, I never would have imagined I would be podiuming next to some of the best in the world let alone being selected for World Championships."

Based in Saskatoon, Shaw trains from March until August focuses on the road racing and then she switches to the track. She also will travel to Ontario monthly to train on the velodrome in Milton.

Wolrd Championship will be held in Italy and Shaw is getting ready trying to focus more on the small details and finetuning her performance.

"We're going about a week and a half early, it's really going to be a matter of adapting to the heat. When you're out in the sun racing for two hours, that is really going to take a toll on you."

She added that her mental preparation won't change.

"I just know that I have to be in the zone, take care of all the unknowns before they happen and focusing on what my strengths are."

She hopes to keep her focus on the race while still enjoying the experience of being in Italy.

"The main focus is the race, that's why we there, that's why Cycling Canada spends all this money to send us there. That being said, while we're out, maybe doing a recovery ride, a training ride, it's really fantastic to get to see some of the scenery and even in a way that you wouldn't get to if you were just there as a tourist."

After the World Championships, she'll be heading out to Quebec for the last World Cup event of the season.

The World Championships in Italy run August 2-5.
