The Estevan Motor Speedway has a new President for the 2018 race season.

On Monday night at the speedway's annual general meeting, Byron Fichter, who was already elected in last year as a board member on a two year term, will serve the second year of his term as president.

"I'm really looking forward to the race season next year," explained the new President, Byron Fichter. "Once again we have a great group of guys who are energetic and enthusiastic about putting on a good show for the fans in 2018."

Devon Gonas and Dale Labatte are new board members, while Aaron Turnbull comes in as Secretary in 2018.

Fichter expects his fair share of challenges as president, but noted that he is looking forward to what ever comes his way.

"The biggest challenge for us at this time of year is getting our schedule hammered out. Something that works with other events in the community and other tracks in the area that we compete with for nights of racing. As always the other biggest challenge is the economy, it's obviously not what it was three or four years ago."

A number of discussions have also taken place in regards to some new and exciting events that Fichter and the board of directors are looking at for 2018.

"We're definitely exploring a few things, a couple things we can't let the cat out of the bag on at this point. We're in preliminary talks about bringing in a sport-mod class, it's not for sure but we are doing our research and due diligence on that. We're also looking at a couple non-race events like the eve of destruction and maybe monster trucks. Nothing is for sure but those are just some of the discussions that we've been tabling so far."

"We're fortunate to have the very competitive classes we have, all the fans will be excited to see that we have slingshots, hobby stocks, stock cars and modifieds once again this year. Of course nothing is solidified but we're always talking with the sprint car league and always love having those guys here so hopefully we can get those guys on the schedule this year. It's a class that everyone seems to like and it draws the fans out," Fichter concluded.
