The Peewee Estevan Bruins showed a strong penalty kill effort and some offensive heat Tuesday evening in a 4-0 defeat of the Weyburn Wings.

On the road in Crescent Point Place in Weyburn, Kade Phillips opened the scoreboard for Estevan in the lone goal of the first frame. Ryker Mathison scored the sole point of the second period, before everything came unleashed in the third, Turner Knockaert and Kolton Schulhauser each finding the twine.

Ty Ferenback stood tall in net to record the shutout victory.

"It kind of got off to a sluggish start. Our goalie kept us in it for the first 10 minutes until we kind of got our feet under us, and then got a really nice goal from Phillips in the last half of the first period...stole some momentum back," related Head Coach Aren Miller.

"I thought we played really well in the second period. Their (Weyburn's) goalie made some big saves, both goalies played really well. Mathison did a really good job and got to the net, and banged in a rebound from Chase Robertson. In the third period, we over. We got a nice goal from Turner on the back end...two goals from our defencement in the third period to seal the deal, and a couple of big, big penalty kills at the end of the game to keep the 'goose egg' on the board. I think, overall, a really solid effort from everybody. I think it was one of the more complete games we've played all year."

The dominating penalty kill may have been the most important keys to the victory, and one of the largest areas of improvement.

"We've got the kids buying into blocking shots. That's huge, because you're obviously out numbered on the penalty kill and if you can get blocked shot, usually up higher in the zone, the pucks are richoshaing and getting out of the zone so we can either get a line change or reset our kill."

"We've also got the kids buying in to where a penalty kill is a way to gain momentum. If we can shut the other team down and not give up many scoring chances, then we've got an opportunity to steal some momentum. We're celebrating a penalty kill just like a power play goal or any other goal, and I think the loudest our bench was last night is when we blocked a couple shots. In a 4-0 game, with 12 seconds left and you get two huge blocked shots, I think it shows the kids are buying in. I think it honestly showed that they were battling hard for their goalie that maybe bailed us out in the first period, so they maybe wanted to return a favor," Miller added.

The Peewee Bruins are back in action when they host the Moose Jaw Warriors on Sunday.
