The Midget AA Estevan Power Tech Bears Cats played the underdog role as well as any team in game one of the South Saskatchewan Female Hockey League final on Sunday night in Regina.

After taking an early lead, the Bear Cats never looked back and held on for a 3-2 win over the Regina Ravens, to take a 1-0 series lead in the best of three championship final.

"The girls came out ready to play, we scored first and they made it close in the end and it was a race to the buzzer, but we were able to hold on and come away with the win," explained Head Coach, Trevor Morrison.

Holding a 3-1 lead in the third period, the Ravens would make things interesting and score late to make it 3-2, but the team effort from the Bear Cats would be enough for them to hold on.

"I'm very proud of the girls. We stuck to the game plan, you always have ups and downs but we worked together. When we did make mistakes, we had someone helping out and it worked in game one."

Picking up goals in the win was Makenna Morrison and Marci Leblanc who had a pair. Regina's loss to Estevan was also just their second in regulation all season long.

Game two gets underway in Estevan on Tuesday night, with a chance for the Bear Cats to wrap up the series on home ice. According to Morrison, the girls will be ready to go when the puck drops at the Power Dodge Ice Centre.

"We can't look past game two, from the first shift of the game we need to get momentum and each line needs to go out and do their job for the full 60 minutes."

"It's going to have some real good action because it's a much smaller rink at the PDIC. There's going to be some nerves but definitely a lot of excitement."

Game time for Tuesday's game two match up is set for 7:30.
