Estevan Junior Roller Derby is seeking to gain more members and staff when they attend City Wide Registration Thursday night.

"I'm hoping that we will be having most of our returning skaters come back, I know a couple have moved a way so we definitely have some spots to fill. Right now, I'm hoping we're sitting at about 20, and we'd like to start this season with 30, so we would love to get at least 10 new skaters. But, we'll take as many as we can," said Coach Loralei Lachamb.

Volunteers and other help is also on the wishlist, and opportunities for that will also be available at the registration table.

"It's actually quite hard to find people to help coach, because not a lot of people know about the sport, it's not something that we grew up with around here. However...we are happy to teach you."

Referees are particularly in need, and anyone wanting to take on the role can be taught from the ground up, as officials run on skates as well.

"Roller Derby is like no other sport offered in Estevan or any other sport I've actually ever seen. We are recruiting girls in grades 4 to 12, we have two different groups, a younger beginners group and a second team that runs as more of an advanced group. It is a full contact sport, but we don't get into that until the skaters learn the basics. For the first few months, we really focus on safety and stopping and falling properly, and basic skating techniques so that they're comfortable on roller skates before we introduce any kind of contact."

She added that the beginner's games are contact-free, and the competitors work their way up through the levels into full contact.

Practices run on Sundays and Thursdays, and they'll also be holding a pair of free bring a friend tryout nights 5:30-7:00 PM at the Bienfait Rink, September 13th and September 16th. Comfy clothes are all that interested parties need to bring, the rest is provided by the club.
