Water polo seems to a be a local sport that is gaining some series momentum. President of the Estevan Sharks water polo club, Melanie Dzeryk says there's been a significant increase of athletes over the last few years.

"We're pretty excited for this season. Our club has grown almost sixty percent over the last three or four years and we're anticipating more growth this year."

"It's a great way to learn to swim and you learn to play water polo at the same time. A lot of families are seeing its hard to get into swimming lessons so they're trying water polo, so they're getting that swimming aspect, a fun game and sport as well."

The club has seen some of their athletes move up in the ranks to compete for the province both nationally and internationally.

"We do have some of our older players now moving to Regina and participating with team Saskatchewan and travelling nationally. There's a lot of opportunities for players in water polo and I think more and more families and kids are seeing that, and that's why they're joining the club."

With the increase in numbers, comes more time in the pool.

"Between all the practices, we have added more pool time so everyone can have a bit more space in the pool to practice," Dzeryk concluded.

The Sharks are holding a free trial on Friday, August 25th at 4:00 p.m. inside the Estevan Aquatic Centre.
