The Southeast Midget AAA Twins baseball club improved to 4-1 early in their 2017 season on Wednesday night, with an 11-0 win over the Regina White Sox in a game played in Weyburn.

Despite that large victory, a much larger win came off the diamond for one local family.

Blaine Kovach, Twins' head coach, heard the Roemer family was planning a fundraiser, to help get a service dog for Nathan Roemer. He began to put in motion to have the hat passed around at the next home game for the Twins, which was to be played in Weyburn at Tom Laing Park. Wednesday night, the fans came through in a big way, contributing more than $2,600.

“I’m completely speechless right now,” said Michelle Roemer, Nathan’s sister, when presented with the amount after the game. “This is above and beyond anything we could have expected in terms as far as donation or community support goes.”

The family had planned a fundraising dinner for May 26th, to help cover the costs of a service dog for Nathan. The service dog costs upwards of $30,000, and would greatly help improve Nathan’s quality of life, according to Michelle.

Nathan was born with two genetic disorders, Partial Trisomy 13Q and Partial Trisomy 11Q, which have affected his physical, emotional, intellectual and social development. Michelle reports the family has exhausted most other treatment options at this point but the family is hopeful a service dog will help Nathan live a more fulfilling life.

Kovach put the plans into motion for the game to be a fundraiser after reading about the Roemers.

When he announced the game would be a fundraiser, he didn’t know what to expect, but he didn’t think breaking $2,500 would be something that would happen.

“We had great support by all the fans to donate money. The traveling Regina White Sox, they helped out too,” Kovach explained after the game. “By the time I got to the ballpark today, I already had $1,200, so, you know, great support by all the communities.”

From here, the Roemers will be holding a lasagna supper fundraiser on May 26th at the Legion in Weyburn. Tickets for the event are $25.
