A cold night in the south east corner of the province set the stage for two hot games hosted the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings.

The first period would be laden with penalties, especially from the Yellow Grass Wheat Kings. After already serving a full two minute penalty kill, the Wheat Kings would take another 2 consecutive penalties to put them down 2 men for about 20 seconds halfway through the first period. Though down two men, the penalties never seemed to be much of an issue as they killed them off and managed to get the scoring underway for the Big Six Hockey League with 6:54 to go in the first.

Oxbow's Ryley Giblett would bring the puck out in front of his goaltender on the penalty kill and would lose his handle on it, giving Thomas Carlton a backhand shot three feet in front of the net to send over the glove of Ethan Veroba and take the game's first lead.

The score sheet would stay quiet until the end of the period and well into the second when Giblett got a gift of his own to redeem himself. After holding the puck in at the Wheat Kings' blue line, Giblett and fired a shot that got past Tanner Erickson, rang the post, and signaled a tie game as it hit the twine.

The game would not be tied much longer as just two minutes later, Brant Hudson would pot another one to retake the lead for the Wheat Kings, and Zach Watson would add another one before the end of the period to put the Wheat Kings up 3-1 as quick as the game was tied.

Once the third period hit, the rust seemed to fall from both teams' wheels and chances were flying left and right into either offensive zone. Yellow Grass would again start the scoring in the period thanks to another play from Zach Watson, another point shot that missed the net this time, but intentionally as the stick of Kashton Jansen was waiting to tap the easy 4-1 goal in.

Yellow Grass added another to make the game 5-1 from Devin Cobbold to seal the game up for Yellow Grass.

Or would it.

The powerplay struggles the Huskies had at the start of the game melted away halfway through the third period and they would capitalize.

In six minutes of each other Oxbow scored three times, Bryson Mayer would pot an easy open net rebound, Steven Henderson would bang in a hard fought rebound, and Tayson Holt would feed Derek Cooneyfor a beautiful wrist shot from the hash marks to bring the game within 1, 5-4 Yellow Grass with 1:32 on the clock.

After the face off, Oxbow would press hard for a full 60 seconds, but after Yellow Grass iced the puck and gave the Huskies a chance to pull Ethan Veroba from the crease, Yellow Grass would fire the puck down for the final tally and the 6-4 win on the road.

In the opening nights other game, it would be down to the wire just as close between the Midale Mustangs and the home town Carlyle Cougars.

Scoring again would be started by the visiting team as Midale's Logan Martinson tallied the game's first goal just under 13 minutes in, but he'd be answered only a minute and 33 seconds later by Carlyle's Mason Belanger.

Carlyle would take their first lead before the period ended thanks to Ben Johnstone.

The second period didn't take long for Midale to answer, as only two minutes in Taylor Van De Sype would tie the game, but the Cougars managed to fight for their lead back before the end of the period once again thanks to Johnstone.

The third period was quiet until halfway through when the Mustangs managed to finally tie the game up with a shot from Garrett Sherlock.

That would leave the game in a gridlock through the rest of the third and forcing to two teams into overtime. Brad Tominski would be the league's first overtime hero this year as he would net the fourth and final goal for Midale 4 minutes into overtime and giving them the final score of 4-3.
