Two teams secured a spot in the upcoming provincial Scotties while on the sheets at the Power Dodge Curling Center over the weekend.

After beating team Lawton 10-7 in Q1 of the Last Chance women's Bonspiel on Saturday, Team Chisholm was the first to grab a berth. Among the four members is Lead Kristy Johnson from Estevan.

"It feels good. You have to play well to earn your way there, so it felt good to be able to do that," said Johnson.

They narrowly missed their previous chance to qualify this year in North Battleford, so they knew they would have to play hard to beat the competition in Estevan.

"On Friday night we just had to learn the ice a little bit. We got caught in a few spots where there was quite a bit of curl," she noted, adding that most of the team has played quite a bit in the PDCC, which allowed them to quickly get comfortable.

Gazing ahead at the new year with the upcoming provincial competition, Johnson shared that they have played practically everybody there at some point, so they have an idea of what to expect.

"We're just looking forward to getting back on the ice together as a team and having a solid week. It's a round robin, so we play everyone. We'll just have to be consistent, play those tough games, and hopefully make our way into the playoffs and go from there."

She added that, as the Scotties get underway earlier this year, they haven't had as much time to prepare, so they will have to make sure they're ready.

Sunday wrapped up with Team Lawton from Saskatoon nabbing the second berth to provincials. Having won Scotties 4 times before, Stefanie Lawton is taking a new team with her to the next level.

"This year has been a little bit more relaxed for us. We're just taking an easier route because our lives are busy. This is probably the best that we've been playing, so I think we feel really good heading into provincials," she expressed.

Having won all their games before falling to Chisholm in the first qualifier on Saturday, Lawton was satisfied with their performance.

"We had some good ends and some maybe not so good ends, but we were able to just grind through it. Even if we did have an upset or something that didn't go our way, we were able to bounce back from that, and I think that that's key."

Lawton said that they will focus on spending time with their families and getting their lives in order over the Christmas break, before returning to the sheets to prepare for the next step.

The provincial Scotties get underway on Janurary 2nd.
