The season for the U14 Elite Girls softball squad ended in dramatic fashion over the weekend, as they ended up with C division provincial bronze in Swift Current.

"We were pretty pleased with the bronze. Our top goal was to get gold, but after that it was to come home with some sort of medal. The girls came through, and I'd call it pretty successful, we're really happy. And it seems like it's always better to win a bronze than to lose a gold, so everybody's a lot more excited after a win. It was a pretty good weekend," said Coach Shawn Madsen.

He related what turned out to be a heart stopping finish to their final game of the season, against a strong Macklin team.

"We went into the game with (the mentality of), that's it, it's the last game of the year, so there's no point in holding anything back. The girls were ready, they wanted it as bad as anybody and proved it, and it really came down to their effort."

"The whole game was back and forth. We'd get a couple, they'd get a couple. We had a pretty good inning in the sixth, and we scored three just on some different plays. We had a couple (runners) on base, and one of our players came up and drilled it over top of their head. As she was rounding second, I was having a look and I could see that it looked like it was going to be a play at the plate. I was able to give her the wave to head home, it was a slide in and a tag that just didn't quite make it in time. Everybody, of course, exploded. That was our sixth run in that inning, so the ump called the game right there. It was an exciting way to end it," Madsen shared.

He added that many of his players will be moving on by next year, however, a strong crop of replacements will be found and he is excited about the future.
